Teeing off from TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tenn., the top 70 players in the PGA Tour get their first taste of action in the PGA Tour's playoffs.

The playoffs continue next week with the BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md., where the top 50 in points after the St. Jude Championship advance.

Canada's Mackenzie Hughes needs a strong showing to keep his playoffs alive as he enters this week at No. 59 in the rankings. Taylor Pendrith enters at No. 37, while Nick Taylor (No. 18) and Corey Conners (No. 13) are safely in place to advance.

Following the BMW Championship, the top 30 in points will compete a week later at the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga.

Pendrith was the first Canadian on the course with an early tee time, and climbed as high as a tie for third place with two birdies in his first six holes.

The Richmond Hill, Ont. native stayed steady from there, but the par-4 sixth was his final birdie of the round. Pendrith faltered on the back-9, with bogeys on 14 and 17 before wrapping up his day with a birdie on the par-4 18, ending his first round at a 1-under 69.

Pendrith is in a good spot to stick around for at least the BMW Championship in a week, but will need to pick up his play this weekend to stay in the mix for a spot in the Tour Championship two weeks from now.
