The first round of the CPKC Women's Open is underway and there's a surprising name fighting for the lead atop the leaderboard in Aphrodite Deng.

The 15-year-old Canadian amateur is 3-under through 16 holes to sit two back of the lead.

Deng posted birdies on her first two holes of the day and was stalled at 4-under for most of the back nine before bogeying the par-4 15th. She settled down with a par on the 16th hole and now looks to put the finishing touches on a strong showing in the opening round.

Back in July, the Calgary native became the first Canadian to win the U.S. Junior Girls' Championship.
